Consular legalization of documents: preparation process

Consular legalization may be required when an apostille does not apply to a particular document and no relevant exemption from authentication is available. Apostille Centre helps identify the preparation process and agree assistance based on the receiving institution’s requirements.

Preparation steps

1. We check the applicability of international agreements and the recipient’s requirements.
2. We clarify the sequence of authentication under the competent authorities’ and consulate’s current instructions.
3. We agree the document set, work involved, cost, estimated timing and transfer of originals.
4. We separately agree translation, representative authority and collection or delivery.

Individual support

If you are abroad, cannot attend an institution in person, have different spellings of your name or lack the required original, describe your situation. We examine the obstacle and identify what supporting evidence, replacement documents or representative authority may be needed.

Checking the appropriate procedure

We consider the document type, applicable international agreements and the recipient’s requirements. A country list alone does not determine the process: the Convention’s entry into force and its application between the relevant countries must be checked.
